The land for Guardian Angel Church was generously donated by the Brooks family of San Fernando. Construction began in 1928 under Ander Koerner Contractors and was completed in 1929.
The first Mass was celebrated on March 19, 1929. That same year, Bishop Cantwell dedicated the church, designating it as a Mission Church of St. Ferdinand’s in San Fernando. At the time, it served approximately 100 families.
Fr. Alphonse Jalbert, O.M.I., was the first priest assigned to Guardian Angel. He raised rabbits, chickens, and goats, and maintained a vegetable garden. He used the produce and livestock to assist needy families in the parish, selling the surplus to help support the church financially.
Fr. Robert Koerner, O.M.I., became the second priest at Guardian Angel, serving for 15 years. During his tenure, he organized parish fundraisers to purchase land for Guardian Angel School. Construction of the sisters’ convent also began during this time.
In 1956, Guardian Angel’s status changed from a mission to a parish. Fr. Paul Stroup was appointed the first pastor. That same year, the convent and school were completed.
In 1957, the Religious of Jesus and Mary arrived to staff the school. The following year, Fr. Paul Stroup was succeeded by Fr. Mario Matic, who oversaw the construction of the rectory and Parish Hall and initiated restoration work on the church building.
In 1966, the parish came under the care of the Spanish Vincentians, with Fr. Narciso Gonzalez serving as pastor. He was succeeded in 1968 by Fr. Celso Garcia. In 1970, Fr. Pedro Villarroyo joined Fr. Garcia as associate pastor.
The Vincentian Fathers were succeeded in 1973 by Fr. John Rohde and Fr. George Miller, who served together in team ministry. Fr. Ed Soto later replaced Fr. Rohde. When the team ministry ended, Fr. George Miller was appointed pastor on September 1, 1981.
Fr. Vicente Gomez became pastor in 1988, followed by Fr. Juan Enriquez in 1995. In 2003, Fr. Steven J. Guitron was appointed pastor, and in 2017, Fr. Rafael Lara took on the role.
In May 2023, construction began on a new location for Guardian Angel Church. Two months later, in July 2023, Fr. Luis Estrada was appointed Administrator of the parish and continues to serve the community.
On April 4, 2025, the new parish campus at 12307 Terra Bella St., Pacoima, CA 91331, was officially blessed and dedicated as the new Guardian Angel Church. The original church has since been designated as a chapel for the parish community.
